Alpacas
Our alpacas are a much-loved part of life at The Fairy Farmers. We care deeply about healthy, happy animals that roam freely around the farm on Sherkin Island. Alpacas are extremely social and it is therefore important that any alpaca has at least 2 others nearby at all times. Alpacas hum to each other as an important means of communication, both to reassure and warn of anything in their environment. Alpaca's are matriarchal and have a female lead to the flock with a very clear pecking order. They have excellent vision and this is one of their primary means of protecting themselves. Alpacas see things long before a person ever would and it is an important survival mechanism that evolved in alpaca's wild ancestors. Aside from their long necks, the most striking feature of alpacas are their beautiful wool that does an incredible job insulating heat as well as keeping out moisture.
Woolly Animals
Ultimately we want happy, healthy animals that live free and easy lives on the farm. One of our long term goals is to maintain and develop the quality of our animals to produce show winners with great temperament. These are the breeding aims we work towards, not claiming every animal is perfect.
Conformation
Correct, balanced proportions; strong straight legs and good alignment; correct movement and tracking; a level strong topline; appropriate body condition and capacity; and a correct jaw and bite.
Fleece
Good density; fineness appropriate to age; fibre consistency; staple length; type-appropriate character; low coarse fibre presence; and good coverage.
Health & Temperament
Strong, robust animals with sound feet, teeth and locomotion; appropriate body condition; calm, manageable temperaments; and good herd behaviour.
